Andy Borash

Andrew J. Borash died Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Andy was born on June 14, 1926 to the late John and Blanche in Yonkers, NY. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Terry Petro Borash, his children Diane B. Peters (Jim), A. Mark Borash (Carol), Kris B. Michaloski (Todd), Marilyn Borash and Kathy B. Reid (Scott) and grandchildren Tony Borash (Melissa), Jessica B. Sheehan (Jack), Sherry P. Cathey (Graham), Andrew Peters (Sabina), Daniel Michaloski, Paul Michaloski and Samantha Reid and great-grandchildren, Ava Peters, Savannah Cathey and Cayden Peters. Surviving sister Mary B. Dam of Pine Plains, NY. Predeceased by Margaret Parish and Anna B. Dam (sisters) and John, Joseph and William Borash (brothers). Andy was a World War II veteran serving in the Philippines and Occupied Japan. Upon returning, Andy began his 39 year career at Union Carbide in NY. Under the GI Bill, he received his BA in Chemistry from NYU at Washington Square. The family first moved to North Carolina in 1960. Andy was a Project Scientist at the Carbide farm in Clayton, NC. In 1972, he was transferred to the Tech Center in South Charleston, WV and returned to Raleigh in 1981. He retired in 1986 and became active with volunteer work with the Red Cross and RSVP at the RDU Airport. As an RDU volunteer, Andy recognized the need for support of our traveling service personnel. He and Jim Van Striens were instrumental in the formation of the USO Center at RDU. He was an active member of several service organizations such as the Gardeners of Wake County and the Raleigh Golden K Kiwanis. Dear to his heart was Barbershop Harmony. Andy joined the Raleigh chorus in 1962. He was one of the founding members of the Kanawha Kordsmen in Charleston, WV in 1974. He was a member of the RTP General Assembly Chorus of which he remained a member until his death. Andy will be remembered for his Smiley Face trademark, his love of country, his passion for the NY Yankees and his love and devotion to his family. A funeral mass will be held 12:00 PM. Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Saint Raphael Catholic Church, 5801 Falls of the Neuse Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Interment will follow the service at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27601. The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM. Monday, November 2, 2009 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the USO at RDU.
